About the map →

Asotin County’s surveillance record is two grant applications, and both are in the board’s own minutes. The first bought body cameras: in July 2024 Sheriff John Hilderbrand brought the state sheriffs’ association’s body camera grant to the commissioners, and two weeks later the office asked to contract with LensLock, a five-year deal running about ten thousand dollars over the grant. The second is pending and more ambitious: in August 2026 a deputy presented an application for a federal COPS microgrant to fund a Drone as First Responder pilot project, drones dispatched to calls ahead of deputies, in a county of about twenty-two thousand people. The board approved applying. Whether the award comes, and what aircraft and rules come with it, is the records request’s subject.

In the two and a half years of board records we read, no plate reader, Flock, or facial recognition item appears for any agency, and the Atlas of Surveillance carries no row for the county at all, not even the body cameras the minutes document, which says something about how far ahead of the national datasets a county’s own record runs.

What this record does not cover

Seven unreadable documents in the window. Clarkston’s police, municipal, never merged into county counts.

Community contributors have mapped no devices in the county in OpenStreetMap yet. When that count appears, it will cover every agency and business at once and never merge with anything above.
