How to show up in Los Angeles County
Surveillance is approved by people who hold public meetings any resident can attend. This page lists the bodies that do that in Los Angeles County, what we have confirmed about attending each one, and where each publishes its agendas.
We do not publish meeting dates. A schedule we cannot check often enough would eventually send someone to the wrong place on the wrong night. Each body below links to wherever it publishes its own agendas and schedule, and that is the copy to trust.

Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors
Watch this oneOn 16 September 2025 this Board carried a motion 4-1 titled "Safeguarding Automated License Plate Readers Data to Restore Community Trust and Prevent Improper Civil Immigration Enforcement". It set up semi-annual reporting on who has been searching the county's plate reader data, and required the Sheriff Civilian Oversight Commission to hold at least one multilingual community forum a year on the policy from January 2026.
- When
- Tuesdays at 9:30 AM. The last Tuesday of the month is mainly for public hearings the county has to hold by law, on zoning, fee increases, special district proceedings and property transactions.

- The county broadcasts meetings live, and runs a separate registration site for people who want to address the Board.
- Public comment
- A speaker registers first through the county's public comment portal. The limit is set per meeting rather than fixed: the September 2026 meeting allowed one minute per item, and donating time to another speaker was not allowed. An interpreter can be requested on the form.
- Written comment
- Through the same portal, which takes up to five attachments as Word, Excel or PDF files. Everything submitted becomes part of the official record. The county asks for comment by 4:00 PM on the Monday before the meeting so it is available to the public in time.

This Board's record is spread across four systems and only one of them works as an archive. The agenda site lists recent meetings and hides documents behind opaque identifiers. Board letters are numbered PDFs on a separate county file server. The county's Legistar instance holds a few dozen events for a board that meets weekly and is not an archive. The full-text search over statements of proceedings, transcripts and supporting documents reaches back to 1989 and is the one to use.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Civilian Oversight Commission
Watch this oneThe Board's September 2025 plate reader motion requires this commission to hold at least one multilingual community forum a year on the plate reader privacy policy, starting in January 2026. That forum is the one meeting in Los Angeles County created specifically so residents can be heard on this subject.

- The third Thursday of each month, 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, unless the commission says otherwise.

- Each meeting has its own Webex registration link, published with the agenda. Recordings go on the commission's YouTube channel.

The commission's meeting venue and its Webex link change from meeting to meeting, so the agenda is the only reliable source for both. It does not publish a per-speaker time limit. It sets aside time at each meeting for families of people killed by Sheriff's deputies to speak, under a separate procedure arranged through its office. Its documents are also filed in the county's commission publications system.
