What we do not know
Washoe County Sheriff
- How many plate readers the Sheriff's Office operates and where they are.
- When the program began, given that the 2024 award covers "continuing costs".
- How long plate reads are kept, who can query them, whether searches are audited, and which agencies outside Washoe County can see the data.
- What the Northern Nevada Interdiction Task Force is entitled to do with reads collected by county equipment.
- Whether any written usage policy exists. Nevada requires none.
What license plate readers are
An automated license plate reader photographs every passing vehicle and records the plate, the time and the place. It does not watch suspects. It logs everyone, and the record is usually kept on a vendor’s servers.
