What we do not know
Hanford Police
- How long the department keeps plate data. The Mayor asked about retention in October 2022 and the minutes record only that staff addressed the council's questions. We have not found a departmental policy, which state law requires to be published.
- How many cameras are operating now. Twenty-five were proposed and not funded; twelve were appropriated. Our record of this council stops at 2023.
- Whether the message board camera in the traffic-safety grant was bought, and whether it is part of the same system as the intersection cameras.
- Who else can search the data. No document we read names another agency, and no sharing arrangement is described either way.
- Whether the private businesses the Chief described as already using the system share anything with the department, and on what terms.
What license plate readers are
An automated license plate reader photographs every passing vehicle and records the plate, the time and the place. It does not watch suspects. It logs everyone, and the record is usually kept on a vendor’s servers.
