What we do not know

Lake County Sheriff

  • How many cameras the office operates now, and whether the 2024 lease replaced or added to the 2021 ones.
  • What the board decided on each item. The county's agenda system records an action for one of four and a roll call for none.
  • Whether any competing offer was ever sought for a system now costing $342,500 over five years.
  • What the audits Policy 469 requires have found.
  • Who can search this county's data. The policy sets no geographic limit.

What license plate readers are

An automated license plate reader photographs every passing vehicle and records the plate, the time and the place. It does not watch suspects. It logs everyone, and the record is usually kept on a vendor’s servers.
