What we do not know
Mendocino County Sheriff
- How many readers the office operates and where they are. The grant proposal budgets six and no count is published.
- Whether either Department of Justice grant was awarded. Both board items ratified applications.
- What the audits Policy 470 requires consist of, and what they have found.
- Whether the office intends to revise its sharing clause, which sets no geographic limit while the police department in the county seat now names the exclusion.
- Whether any vendor network sharing setting is enabled, and what it is set to.
Ukiah PD
- How many cameras the department operates and where they are. The only figure we found is in an opinion column.
- What the contract with the vendor says, and which council meeting approved it.
- What prompted the policy revision between October 2025 and March 2026.
- What the audits the policy requires consist of, and what they have found.
- Whether any vendor network sharing feature is enabled, now that the policy names the vendor's database as a request channel.
What license plate readers are
An automated license plate reader photographs every passing vehicle and records the plate, the time and the place. It does not watch suspects. It logs everyone, and the record is usually kept on a vendor’s servers.
