What we do not know
Ventura County Sheriff
- Which agencies queried the data, and from where. The audit counted the queries; the page does not name the queriers.
- What the 299 immigration-related search justifications said, and who entered them.
- Whether anything actually left. The Sheriff states the office does not know.
- Why a window that closed in March 2025 was not audited until February 2026.
- How many other California agencies were affected. Flock told this office that others had experienced similar issues.
- How many cameras the office operates, what they cost, and under what contract.
- Whether the Board of Supervisors ever approved the system, or ever held the public comment opportunity state law contemplates.
What license plate readers are
An automated license plate reader photographs every passing vehicle and records the plate, the time and the place. It does not watch suspects. It logs everyone, and the record is usually kept on a vendor’s servers.
