What we do not know

Nye County Sheriff

  • Whether the two 2010 readers are still in service, were retired, or were replaced, and by what.
  • Where they were installed, and whether they were fixed or vehicle-mounted.
  • Whether any plate data was ever shared outside the county, and whether any of it is still held.
  • Whether the Sheriff's Office has ever written a plate reader policy. Nevada requires none.

What license plate readers are

An automated license plate reader photographs every passing vehicle and records the plate, the time and the place. It does not watch suspects. It logs everyone, and the record is usually kept on a vendor’s servers.
