What we do not know

Lane County Sheriff

  • What approved the purchase. It is not a named item in three years of board agenda titles, so it travelled some other path: a consent packet, a procurement below board thresholds, or a grant.
  • Whether the cameras have since been deployed, and if so where the SB 1516 section 7 policies are published.
  • The contract: count, cost, retention period, and the sharing configuration.

What license plate readers are

An automated license plate reader photographs every passing vehicle and records the plate, the time and the place. It does not watch suspects. It logs everyone, and the record is usually kept on a vendor’s servers.
