What we do not know
Webb County Sheriff
- How many readers the Sheriff's Office operates, and where the fixed ones and the two trailers are.
- How long a plate read is kept, and under what schedule.
- Whether the office shares its reads with the state plate reader database or with any other agency.
- Whether a written use policy exists, and who approved it.
- What the two 2026 grant applications were awarded, and what they bought.
What license plate readers are
An automated license plate reader photographs every passing vehicle and records the plate, the time and the place. It does not watch suspects. It logs everyone, and the record is usually kept on a vendor’s servers.
